In October we'll be hosting two classes taught by InSights Training. I consider both of these courses essential for anyone who is serious about being well prepared to handle the most likely situations citizens may encounter. We only offer these courses once every few years, so we strongly encourage you to take advantage of this great training opportunity.

The Defensive Folding Knife course is a one day teaching the basics of how to use a one-handed knife (Spyderco, Benchmade, etc.) to defeat a variety of lethal close range attacks. This course is highly suggested for women and teenagers, who are the most likely group to encounter grabs, chokes, and holds with the greatest disparity of force during violent assaults. It is also recommended for those that are frequently in situations where they cannot carry a firearm. Part of the course will address techniques for integrating knife skills with concealed carry gun skills, for those that carry both weapons.

The 2-day Street and Vehicle Tactics course teaches self defense while at work, in your automobile, when traveling, and while in public settings. More than half the course will deal with situations in and around your car. This course will include classroom lecture and roleplaying exercises.

In November we'll offer a new class, Advanced Training 7. This force on force course consists of the scenarios I've run the past 2 years at the Polite Society conferences. This course will start in the late afternoon and continue into the evening hours so that some scenarios can be conducted in low light conditions.

I have received several lots of reloading equipment and supplies, a Dillon 550B reloading press w/ multiple caliber conversion kits, shooting videos and other items that we are selling on consignment. The items are listed at

I have scheduled an AT-6 course on Sept 13th. If you are not interested in the AT-6 course but would be interested in an AT-3 (one handed defensive shooting skills) course instead, let me know. I am open to holding whichever of the two courses has the most interest. AT-3 teaches students to shoot and manipulate their guns using only one hand. This course is important because often in defensive situations only one hand is available or functional. AT-6 is a more general live fire course putting attendees through drills covering a wide range of handgun skills.

If you would be interested in a 1/2 day or 1 day AR-15 defensive rifle course, to be held at the Fayette County Gun Club in LaGrange, let me know. The course would be taught by a law enforcement "patrol rifle" instructor and Marine reservist with recent service & combat experience.

InSights is offering a unique summer training experience this August in Washington State- an 8 day RECONDO course providing trainees instruction in individual and small unit tactics, leadership and planning.

The Texas Engineering Extension Service is hosting Pulitzer-nominated author Lt. Col David Grossman (writer of "On Killing", "On Combat" and other books on violent behavior). He will be presenting an 8 hour course entitled "How Kids are Learning to Kill and Learning to Like It". The focus of this course is on school-based violence. Cost is $30 and registration is open to the public. The course will be held on Monday, August 11st in College Station. Attendees will receive 8-hours credit with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).

KR Training is mentioned in Keith Pridgen's Tactical Gear Column about the Polite Society conference in the August 2008 Gun World magazine. Look for Gun World on your local newsstand or subscribe by visiting

According to local news reports from July 3rd, an Austin woman defended herself with a .38 cal revolver when an intruder scaled a fence and broke into her Barton Skyway-area apartment. When she saw the man jump the fence, she ran inside and grabbed her .38 caliber pistol. She went back outside to see if the man had left. She said that's when he attacked her by tackling her to the ground from behind. She reportedly shot the man only after trying to deter him without firing first. She fired 3 rounds, one of which hit the man in the face. 30 minutes later, 20 year old Christopher Benavides was arrested at Brackenridge Hospital when he showed up at the emergency room with a facial gunshot wound. He told police that his intent was to steal the woman's cell phone and sell it for cash. He had two warrants out for his arrest. The armed citizen was not charged for her use of deadly force in self-defense.

Those opposed to proposed rules allowing permit holders to carry in national parks have gotten the deadline for comments extended so that anti-gun groups can mobilize to flood the Interior Dept. with comments.Visit, read the information and then follow the link on that page to submit a comment supporting the proposed changes. With the Democrats expected to take total control of Congress in the next election, it is likely that we will have very few opportunities to advance gun rights at the Federal level in the next 2 years. This "common sense" change will make carry rules in each state consistent between state and Federal parks. Don't just read this and expect that enough "other people" will take action on this that you don't need to.

Karl will be performing with Java Jazz at Manuel's North (near 183 and 360), Thursday July 24th from 6:30-9 pm, and plays with the house band on frequent Fridays and Saturdays at Luigi's Patio Ristorante in College Station. He'll also be playing with Johnny D and the "Gene-O-Tones" at M.D. Anderson's Science Park summer party August 1st.
